Shopify is moving faster in 2026 than at any point in the platform's history. Between checkout extensibility deadlines, international shipping policy changes, and API deprecations that directly affect conversion tracking, the stakes for staying current have never been higher for 7-9 figure ecommerce brands. This tracker documents every meaningful Shopify update in 2026, with context on what each change means for your operations and what you need to do about it. Bookmarked brands, updated weekly.
For ad platform changes affecting your Meta, Google, TikTok, and AppLovin campaigns, see our Google Ads 2026 tracker and Meta Ads 2026 tracker. For Shopify-specific updates that affect your storefront, checkout, tracking infrastructure, and international selling, this is your home base.
Shopify launched Discount Rollouts, letting merchants A/B test discount offers on a percentage of live traffic before deploying broadly. Coordinate a discount launch alongside theme and checkout changes in a single rollout. Also on October 5: Shop Pre-Verification now identifies and verifies Shop users while they browse (before checkout), enabling pre-filled Shop Pay, cart sync across devices, and built-in abandoned cart recovery. No merchant configuration required.
The October 1 API block is now active. Brands that have not migrated to Web Pixels API are frozen and cannot update pixel IDs, fix broken events, or modify tracking parameters until March 2027. Audit your pixels immediately in Shopify Admin, then Settings, then Customer Events.
Three major Shopify changes in 2026 have direct operational impact for ecommerce brands: the August 26 Thank You Page checkout extensibility deadline (which broke conversion tracking for stores that did not migrate), the September 1 announcement that script tag creation will be permanently blocked starting October 1 (putting pixel and analytics infrastructure at risk for brands still on legacy installs), and the Managed Markets DDU deprecation on August 24 (which forced international brands to switch to DDP shipping or stop selling cross-border through Managed Markets). Each of these changes has a hard deadline and real revenue consequences for brands that miss them.

On October 1, 2026, Shopify launched Canvas, a generative-AI-powered visual design workspace that lets any merchant build a fully custom online store in approximately 20 minutes. Every page of your store is laid out in a single infinite workspace. Merchants direct Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, through chat and watch changes land in real time. At launch, Canvas does not support third-party themes, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks. Read the full breakdown for what to do now before Black Friday.

On October 1, 2026, Shopify launched its market-driven shipping model, moving rate configuration from delivery profiles into Shopify Markets. The key change: when a cart qualifies for multiple flat or order-value rates within one shipping option, only the highest rate now applies. All new stores are automatically enrolled; existing stores must migrate by July 1, 2027.

On October 2, 2026, Shopify added discount support to its Rollouts feature, giving all merchants on Basic plans and above a native way to schedule BFCM offers and A/B test discount structures before Black Friday. Experiment mode -- available on Grow plan and above -- splits traffic 50/50 between two offer types and tracks conversion results. Brands can also bundle a discount launch with their theme and checkout changes into a single coordinated Rollout deploy, eliminating the multi-team launch chaos that causes version mismatches on high-traffic days. With 7 to 14 days of experiment time needed for statistical significance, brands must start testing before October 15 to have data in hand before BFCM configurations lock. Full breakdown and action steps here.

Starting October 1, 2026, Shopify's scriptTagCreate and scriptTagUpdate GraphQL mutations will be permanently blocked. Any app or custom code that deploys tracking scripts via the legacy ScriptTag API will silently fail on new installs or updates after that date. The full injection cutoff follows on March 1, 2027. Brands must audit their pixel setup now, update all major ad platform apps to their latest Web Pixel versions, and migrate any custom script tag implementations to Shopify's Web Pixels API or Theme App Extensions before the deadline. Brands that completed the August 26 Thank You Page migration have already taken the first step. The October 1 change is the next critical checkpoint in the same journey. Full breakdown here.
Published September 22, 2026
Starting September 21, 2026, Shopify changed how it counts sessions in Analytics. Nine session-based metrics (conversion rate, add-to-cart rate, bounce rate, and others) now exclude bot and system traffic, creating a cleaner baseline of real human shopper activity. Orders, sales, and customer counts are unaffected. Brands must set September 21 as a new measurement baseline and brief their media teams before making Q4 budget decisions based on session data.

Shopify Managed Markets ended Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) shipping support on August 24, 2026. Brands selling internationally through Managed Markets must now use Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), where duties and taxes are collected at checkout and remitted by Shopify. Stores that did not switch had their cross-border Managed Markets orders paused. DDP also requires Shopify Markets Pro eligibility and correct HS code configuration on products. Full breakdown here.

On August 26, 2026, Shopify ended support for "Additional Scripts" on the Thank You Page and Order Status Page for all non-Plus stores. Any custom tracking code, pixel fire, or analytics script injected through the legacy Additional Scripts field stopped working that day. Stores that had not migrated to checkout extensibility lost post-purchase conversion data for Meta, Google, TikTok, and AppLovin campaigns. The migration requires moving all Thank You Page logic to Shopify's checkout extensibility format using app blocks or custom pixel integrations. Full breakdown here.

This tracker is updated whenever a meaningful Shopify change is published that affects ecommerce brand operations. We monitor Shopify's developer changelog, news blog, and support documentation continuously and add entries when a change directly affects how you sell, track conversions, or manage international operations. Financial updates, executive announcements, and developer-only changes without merchant impact are excluded.
The most urgent Q4 2026 Shopify deadlines are the October 1 script tag creation block (migrate your pixels now) and the March 1, 2027 full script tag injection cutoff (build this into your Q4 roadmap). Both affect conversion tracking accuracy for Meta, Google, TikTok, and AppLovin campaigns. Brands that miss October 1 risk broken pixels that fail silently, which is particularly damaging during Black Friday and Cyber Monday when automated bidding systems depend on clean real-time purchase signals to allocate budget correctly.
Starting October 23, 2026, Shopify Tax and the Tax Platform will automatically calculate and apply tax to return shipping fees for US orders. For most merchants, no action is required. Merchants who currently use a manual process to calculate, collect, import, or reconcile tax on return shipping fees must remove that process before October 23 or risk double-counting tax. The change does not affect restocking fees, handling fees, or non-US orders. Read the full breakdown.
Shopify launched Canvas on October 1, 2026, a new AI-powered site builder that gives merchants a unified design surface where every page of their store is displayed simultaneously. Merchants redesign their storefront through conversational instructions to Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI agent, with changes applied in real time across all templates without requiring coding or design skills. Canvas arrives as AI-driven shopping orders have grown 15x year-over-year. With $95.8 billion in U.S. online spending projected for October alone (Adobe 2026), optimizing your storefront now carries the performance lift through the entire holiday window. Read the full breakdown.
The script tag deprecation (October 1, 2026 and March 1, 2027) applies equally to all Shopify plans including Shopify Plus. The August 26 Thank You Page deadline applied primarily to non-Plus stores, as Plus stores had a different timeline. The Managed Markets DDU deprecation applies to any store using Managed Markets for cross-border selling, regardless of plan. Check each change individually to confirm your plan's specific impact.
Shopify's developer changelog at shopify.dev/changelog documents all API and platform changes. For merchant-facing updates, shopify.com/news and the Shopify admin notifications are primary sources. For the changes that directly affect your ad performance and operations, this tracker filters what matters from Shopify's broad update stream and gives you the specific actions required so you do not have to monitor every source yourself.

Shopify's "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting is ON by default and auto-enrolls eligible stores in every new AI shopping channel Shopify adds. Currently active: Meta, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Direct checkout is enabled for all four, meaning purchases completed inside those AI apps do not fire Google Analytics or custom tracking pixels. Check your Sales channels > Agentic settings now. If staying enrolled, add server-side conversion tracking immediately before your Q4 data is affected.

On October 5, 2026, Shopify launched Shop Pre-Verification, identifying Shop app users while browsing to pre-fill Shop Pay, sync carts across devices, and trigger abandoned checkout recovery automatically, all with zero merchant setup. On October 2, Shopify launched Discount Rollouts, letting brands A/B test discount offers against a share of traffic and coordinate launches with theme changes. Both features require action before BFCM.
Oct 2, 2026
Shopify added discount support to Rollouts on October 2, letting merchants on Basic plans and above schedule and A/B test promotional offers alongside theme and checkout changes. The Grow plan and above unlocks a 50/50 experiment mode that compares two discount structures head-to-head with live conversion data. Run your BFCM discount experiment now to have results before November 15.
Oct 5, 2026
Shop now identifies and verifies shoppers before checkout on all browsers. Pre-filled Shop Pay, cart sync across devices, one-tap sign-in, and automatic abandoned cart recovery are live for all stores with no merchant setup required. Verify it's working by adding to cart on one device and checking another.
Oct 9, 2026
As of October 9, Shopify shares compare-at prices with AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog. AI agents like Meta Muse, Google AI Mode, and Copilot can now see when your products are marked down. Check Settings, then Apps and Sales Channels, then Shopify Catalog, then Catalog Mapping to verify the Compare-at toggle is set correctly before your BFCM sale launches.
